Black Friday at the bookshop - book six, Black Friday at the Secondhand Bookworm

I have been writing book six in my 'The Secondhand Bookworm' novels today and making a little progress through chapter two. Once I get going I can bring all my plot planning, memories, ideas and characters together quite quickly and the writing flows. Chapter one opens on Monday leading up to Black Friday. Last minute preparations are being made on the Bargain Book Yard located at the back of The Secondhand Bookworm. The Duke is throwing a November ball at the castle where he will be abseiling down his largest turret, Troy is throwing a Thanksgiving dinner and there is an infestation of fleas from books bought in Itchingfield. It's another week in the bookshop!


We have a new character in this novel - Paperback Pam. Paperback Pam is based on a work colleague of mine who was also a very good friend of my mum's. Her husband worked with the dad of the owner of the bookshop that I worked in for ten years. She was lovely and earned her name from spending all her time sorting out the paperback whenever she worked. She did a fantastic job. When she died about ten years ago, her son asked my dad to paint a picture of her. It looks just like her!


I like to capture the seasons in my writing so have some November events going on in Castletown. Humphrey and Nora go on the Deer Rut Safari on the Duke's estate. This is based on the Safari's at Knepp in Sussex which we have enjoyed (especially their bat and moth walks). An ice rink has arrived by the river, there's an autumn farmer's market in the town square, Felix has a sideline as a ghost writer, there's a giant pumpkin competition, honey show, square dancing on the cobbles, corn doll making, sheep racing down the hill, scarecrow making, a hilarious dog show (Cara's dog Arthur takes part), Victorian Christmas wreath making, fungi foray, history, literature, and of course, the BARGAIN HUNTERS.

Black Friday at the Secondhand Bookworm will be a week of fun and bookshop madness - available to read (hopefully) this November, for something different this Black Friday!

A trip to Badgers Books, Worthing and some resources

Today (Friday 20th December 2019) my sister had her eye test in Specsavers so afterwards we walked down to Badgers Books, a secondhand bookshop in Worthing just off of Montegue Street. I was interested in buying some cheap old books for mixed media collage canvases that I have been doing lately. I am now not immune to the smell of used books having not worked in a bookshop since 2012. I had become immune to it after ten years running a secondhand bookshop in Arundel (and Worthing and Chichester) but no, it was strong and familiar again like when I first started in my bookshop in 2002... Badgers Books is smaller than the bookshop I worked in and the one that features in my series of novels 'The Secondhand Bookworm'. It was easy to navigate and my sister said she loved the mess, with books piled up everywhere.
